guweiz – 炜炜 – my inspirations

Looking at Guweiz’s art always made me wonder of far away lands. His pieces always leaves my brain drifting, thinking about all the little details that came together to create that lingering feeling. I came across him several years ago and he is still one of my most favorite digital artist. I don’t think I will ever get even remotely close to him. Since we are on that topic, I actually don’t feel aligned to him because of that. I am just too lazy and weak to make lines so fine and colors so harmonic.

Here’s what I think he does right-

Characters- All his artworks are about people. More specifically woman. There are a lot of fan arts (Ayanami, 2B, Mumei), and a lot of his pieces are OCs (to my best knowledge) and some studies. What’s great about all these characters other than their visual appeal is their personality. Almost every person he draws feels distant. They live in their own worlds, of which we are only getting a glimpse of. He does this through insanely deliberate but subtle emotional depiction, their outfits and the surrounding environment. Which brings us to the next point,

Environment- Each of his pieces are intricately rich with environment and background that tells us about the character. If you think about it, by keeping his characters discrete, he actually highlights the environment more through contrast- the viewer sucks in whatever information they find on screen to learn about the beautiful heroines. That’s another thing that amazes me is that his focus is characters, yet the surrounding environment often times looks even more astonishing.

Color- most of his colors are quite dark in value, with some highlights. He uses the iconic yellow light in a lot of his pieces- sometimes in the form of an earring, sometimes lanterns, sometimes butterflies. His lighting is often very dramatic- even in mundane scenes. Especially in mundane scenes.

Overall I find him a master of the craft, pouring so much effort into each of his pieces. He makes me want to draw cleaner lines. I hope you liked his works too! And if you do, be sure to support him. Thank you for reading.
